How to cold email a stranger

The situation

You are writing to someone who does not know you and owes you nothing. They will decide in about two seconds, and most of that decision is made on the first line.

The structure that survives contact: a reason you are writing to them specifically, one concrete thing that makes you credible, and a small ask with a date attached.

Why it is hard

A cold email is a maximal imposition with no relationship to draw on, so every conventional politeness move — preamble, flattery, extended context — costs you attention you have not yet earned. Brevity does the redress work instead: a short message visibly respects the reader’s time, and a small, specific ask is easier to grant than a vague large one.

What to actually write

What to avoid

  • "I hope this email finds you well." It marks the message as a template before the second line.
  • Explaining your company before your reason for writing. Nobody reads paragraph two of a stranger.
  • "Let me know if you would like to chat." An ask with no date is a decision they can defer forever.
